Skin Cancer Sreening

Skin cancer is the most common of all cancer types. More than 2 million skin cancers are diagnosed each year in the United States. That's more than all other cancers combined. The number of skin cancer cases has been going up over the past few decades.
The good news is that you can do a lot to protect yourself and your family from skin cancer (such as using Dermalogica's Daylight Defense products or any full spectrum daily sun protectant), and/or to catch it through screening early enough so that it can be treated effectively.
What causes skin cancer?

Most skin cancers are caused by to much exposure to UVA and UVB rays. Much of this exposure comes from the sun, but some may come from man-made sources, such as indoor tanning lamps. Finding possible skin cancers doesn't require any x-rays or blood tests – just your eyes and a mirror. If skin cancer does develop, finding it early is the best way to ensure it can be treated effectively.

What is cancer screening?

Screening is looking for cancer before a person has any symptoms. This can help find cancer at an early stage. When abnormal tissue or cancer is found early, it may be easier to treat. By the time symptoms appear, cancer may have begun to spread. Screening tests are given when you have no cancer symptoms.

If a screening test result is abnormal, you may need to have more tests done to find out if you have cancer.

When should I get screened?

Those at risk for skin cancer or are over 40 yrs of age should have an annual skin cancer screening. If you are between the ages of 20 to 40 and for those who are not at risk should have skin cancer screening every two to three years. If you have a personal history of skin cancer, more frequent exams are warranted which may range from every three to six months.

Those at risk include individuals with excessive UV exposure, a history of blistering sunburns as a child, those with atypical or large moles, individuals with a personal or family history of melanoma in the first degree and/or those that are receiving immunosupressive therapy.

How to heal dry, cracked feet

Dry, cracked feet. We've all been there ... and it's not a fun place to be. Not only does it make you not want to wear those really cute strapy sandals that you love, but excessively dry feet can lead to painful cracks in the heal.  This is a conditioned that is worsened by the summer heat and the skimpy foot wear we parade around in because of the warmer temps.

So, what can we do to fix this uncomfortable problem?

If you follow these easy tips, you will have soft, beautiful feet year round!

1. About an hour before bedtime, soak your feet in warm water for 15 minutes. After soaking, pat feet dry.  Soaking in warm water will help soften some of the dry skin that has built up and will assist in the following steps.

2.  Gently exfoliate feet with a foot paddle. Try to avoid using a pumice stone as it is easy to cut the foot when to much pressure is applied. Don't SCRUB your foot with the paddle. Simply use gentle back and forth motions in order to remove a light layer of the dry skin. I would suggest placing a paper towel or hand towel down before this step in order to catch any skin that is removed with the paddle.

3.  Apply a moderate layer of Heel-tastic (which we proudly carry here at Gallery Spa of Historic Roswell) to the foot, paying special attention to the dry and/or cracked areas gently massaging foot to help with absorption. Then slip on a clean, dry pair of socks. Not everyone is a fan of sleeping with their socks on (including myself) however, this is an important part of the process and can not be skipped.

4.  Go to bed.

5.  When you get up in the morning, remove your socks and your feet should feel instantly softer. Repeat these steps nightly (for about a week) until your feet are soft and crack free.

Once your feet have healed, repeat these steps once a week (or more if needed) in order to maintain your soft, smooth, beautiful feet.

Tanning vs. Spray Tanning??

Did you know that up to 80% of Americans under the age of 25 think they look better with a tan? We all want to be tan this time of year.  A beautiful tan makes us look thinner, makes our muscles look more toned and shows off how much fun we've been having this summer! Unfortunately for to many people, getting that summer glow means hanging pool side for hours baking.
There are only so many options out there when it comes to getting that perfect summer tan. But before you go out to the tanning booth or bake yourself in the sun, make sure to educate yourself on the effects of sun damage.
The sun contains two types of ultraviolet radiation to the skin. UVB rays and UVA rays.  UVB rays are the ones that cause sunburn. UVA rays are what tans the skin. UVA rays actually penetrate the epidermis and causes the melanocytes cells in your skin to produce melanin. Melanin is the pigment in skin caused from sun exposure and is actually the skins way of trying to protect itself from burning.
Not only do UVA rays leave your skin looking bronzed, they also cause major, long lasting skin damage. This is because the UVA rays penetrate down into the dermis whereas UVB rays only affect the epidermis (which is why a tan lasts longer than a burn). The dermis contains the blood vessels and nerves and as a result to over exposure to UVA rays, damage can be caused to the immune system which leads to melanoma and other extremely dangerous forms of skin cancer.
Over 1 million new cases of skin cancer were diagnosed in the USA in 2010 alone ... many of which were found in individuals in their 20s!!! This is a major epidemic that is easily cured.
Cancer is not the only issue that goes along with sun exposure. The damaging rays of the sun will also prematurely age the skin and even eye problems such as cataracts.
Spray on tans have become a way for people to get that sun-kissed glow without the risks of UV rays and sun damage. They are perfect for getting a little color before a trip or a special event. Since the main ingredient, dihydroxyacetone or DHA, reacts with the keratin protein on the top layer of skin, the results are temporary and the chemical is never absorbed into the skin. This is why spray tans fade after a few days, because the darkened skin is naturally sloughed off. This is great compared to the alternative of tanning beds and natural sun, because the damage effects your skin long after you've been exposed to the harsh rays.
We want to keep you looking and actually being healthy ... both inside and out!

Get that beautiful sun-kissed look without all the skin damage. Come in for a custom air brush spray tan here at Gallery Spa of Historic Roswell! Buy a package of 3 or more and receive 15% off!!

Massage luxury or maintenance for good health?

Many people still consider massage a luxury and actually feel guilty for indulging in such a luxury.  However it is so much more, it is an investment in your health.  Massage is packed full of benefits.
  • Alleviate low-back pain and improve range of motion.
  • Assist with shorter, easier labor for expectant mothers.
  • Ease medication dependence by relieving pain.
  • Enhance immunity by stimulating lymph flow—the body’s natural defense system.
  • Exercise and stretch weak, tight, or atrophied muscles.
  • Help athletes of any level prepare for, and recover from, strenuous workouts.
  • Improve the condition of the body’s largest organ—the skin.
  • Increase joint flexibility.
  • Lessen depression and anxiety.
  • Promote tissue regeneration, reducing scar tissue and stretch marks.
  • Pump oxygen and nutrients into tissues and vital organs, improving circulation.
  • Reduce post surgery adhesion and swelling.
  • Reduce spasms and cramping.
  • Relax and soften injured, tired, and overused muscles.
  • Release endorphins—amino acids that work as the body’s natural painkiller.
  • Relieve migraine pain.
  • Relieves jet lag
  • Assist in relieving the pain  and tight muscles associated with scoliosis.
It is believed that many disease and illnesses begin with stress and lack of sleep.  Many people say after a massage they sleep better, have better digestive habits, and overall more relaxed.
Most HSA and FSA will reimburse you for your massage with a doctor's letter recommending massage.  Most doctor's will be glad to provide you with a Rx for massage.
So invest in your health and schedule regular monthly massages without guilt.

The Top Extrinisic causes of Dry Skin

Extrinsic refers to external factors that impact skin health, such as our environment and lifestyle. Below are some of the major extrinsic causes of dry skin.

Weather / Environmental elements Cold winds and low temperatures can dry out skin, depriving it of balanced levels of oils, and contributing to premature aging. Prolonged exposure to the sun causes water to evaporate from skin. Forced air heating also dries out skin: warm, dry air acts like a sponge, soaking up moisture from everything it touches.

Lifestyle The trend of low-fat or fat-free diets can deprive our bodies of skin-friendly Essential Fatty Acids (EFAs) critical to all parts of a healthy functioning body. They help protect against water loss within cells and throughout skin, helping to prevent dryness, keeping skin supple and hydrated. An EFA deficiency can result in chronic itching, dryness, scaling, and thinning.

Smoking can have a drying effect on skin: it drains skin and body of vitamins A and C and constricts blood vessels (which equates to less blood flow) – meaning smoking is somewhat like suffocating skin from the inside.

Excess intake of alcoholic beverages and certain medications (such as nasal decongestants) can also contribute to dry skin.

Caring for your skin on a daily basis is very important. Preventative is the key. Take care of your skin regularly and it will stay looking good through out your life. Keep your self hydrated on the inside and outside. Your skin is your first defense against disease, keep it healthy so it can continue to protect you. Regular exfoliation is a must as well as moisturizer. Without exfoliating your skin moisturize is being absorbed by excess dry skin cells. It is very important that you use a good quality exfoliant on your face. If the product is to rough it can cause damage to the sensitive more thin layer on your face. Also treat your neck and chest area as part of your face. It is also has more delicate skin than the rest of your body and is one of the tale tell signs of aging.

So remember:
  1. Your skin is your first defense against disease.
  2. It is easier to maintain healthy skin than to try to repair it.
  3. Hydrate inside and out. Drink plenty water and use moisturizer regularly.
  4. Exfoliate Don't use the same exfoliant on your face that you use on your body.
  5. Don't forget to treat your neck & chest the same as you do your face.

Skin Care: Hyperpigmentation

Get your personalized product prescription for skin health results today by sitting with us during your Complimentary Skin Bar lesson and Face Mapping. Mention this article and go home with a sample from the Chroma White line which targets hyperpigmentation!!! hormones and uneven skin tone.
Melasma is hormone-related hyperpigmentation caused by increased hormone stimulation. It is most commonly experienced by women who are pregnant (which is why it’s also known as the “mask of pregnancy”) or taking contraceptives, but can also be caused by cosmetics or medications. The most common pattern of melasma is centrofacial: on the chin, upper lip, cheeks, nose, and forehead. But it can also show up to a lesser extent on the cheeks, nose, and jaw line. Studies suggest up to 75% of women may develop melasma during pregnancy and about 33% of women on oral contraceptives show symptoms as well. However, once hormonal fluctuations subside, such as the end of pregnancy or the discontinuing of oral contraceptives, the hyperpigmentation often disappears. It’s important you speak with a skin care professional, especially if you’re pregnant, before beginning treatment for hyperpigmentation. Make an appointment today and get a free sample from the Chroma White line of Dermalogica.

Massage and Grief Recovery

When we lose someone we love either to death or divorce it leaves a person feeling like there is a deep hole in their life that just cannot be filled. When it is someone that we have invested a lot of our heart, time and efforts into and suddenly they’re gone, what do you do with all that energy? Many times when we lose someone close to us we have been their primary care giver during their illness investing months or maybe even years into their care. Suddenly not only have we lost our loved one but we have also lost the activity that has filled our life during their care. When this first happens normally the first 6 weeks we feel numb, people are bringing in food, stopping by, calling, sending cards etc. But then that dwindles too. Then the quiet sets in. Anyone of us that has lost someone can relate to all or some part of this. Grief can be so overwhelming that it can cause you to ache emotionally and physically. Massage can help with both. With grief comes the loss of sleep and being able to relax. With massage you get many benefits. The relaxation of course, but the relaxation actually helps reduce the stress and promotes better rest. When we get the proper rest we are more capable of coping. The body holds both emotional and physical memory in the muscles. So by receiving massage it gives the body the opportunity to have a new more pleasant memory which helps heal our spirit. You might think of it as retraining our thought process making us feel more hopeful. Not so alone.
Even though this has been geared more to losing a loved one to death many of the same emotional components come with divorce too.
